Adults range from 9.1 to 14.2 inches in length and have a 22.4 to 23.6-inch wingspan. Breeding adults are dark gray above with black heads, black undersides, and pale underwings. They have dark legs, eyes, and bills. Black Terns prefer wetlands with extensive vegetation and open water for breeding.
